L’Accademy ha premiato l’ultimo lavoro di Martin Scorsese, Hugo, il francese The Artist e Parodiso Amaro con George Clooney. Tra le attrici protagoniste svetta Meryl Streep, anche se il suo The Iron Lady non è entrato nei 10 film in lizza per il premio più importante. Grande sorpresa per le due candidature importanti per Le Amiche della Sposa (Miglior Attrice non Protagonista e Miglior Sceneggiatura), infatti i film comici sono notoriamente snobbati dall’Accademy. Buon risultato anche per il delizioso The Help, con tre delle attrici in lizza per un premio e il film tra i 10 nominati come Miglior Film.
