Al contrario (e ci verrebbe da dire per fortuna!) Niall si è chiuso in studio di registrazione, regalandoci uno degli album più suggestivi e delicati del 2017. Flicker è, in buona sostanza, un disco che si dissocia dal candy pop da classifica con cui l’artista si è fatto conoscere a inizio carriera e che si avvicina piuttosto al pop rock d’autore e al folk: il sentore che Niall sentisse la necessità di un cambiamento ce l’avevamo avuto già con il primo, straordinario singolo This Town (pubblicato il 29 settembre 2019), una sensazione confermata dai successivi singoli Slow Hands e Too Much to ask. Il primo album solista di Niall Horan è insomma composto da un totale di 13 brani romantici e prettamente acustici, perfetti da ascoltare in una fredda giornata autunnale, magari sotto le coperte: il disco, come confermato dall’artista in una recente intervista concessa a Vevo, si è ispirato per questo progetto a dei maestri del rock d’autore come Fleetwood Mac e gli Eagles. Il disco è stato inoltre scritto interamente dallo stesso Niall in collaborazione con Greg Kurstin e Julian Burretta.
